In 1920 J. van de Wal was already an established name in the fish trade of Rotterdam. In those days, fish was cheap and plentiful. Grandfather van de Wal sold the fish directly to the consumer.
In spite of the low prices and the plentiful supply it was a hard and tiring existence. Slowly, but surely sales increased and the current owner's father was asked to come and work in the business. Around 1947, Father van de Wal realised that there was more scope in wholesale trade and he started a local wholesalers business situated in Rotterdam. This was set up in a small-scale way at the auction grounds belonging to the then operational fish auc tion. After a few years the company began to grow, and new, larger premises were required. These were found in 1966 and the third generation of the van de Wal family came to work in the business.
In 1992, J. van de Wal Jr decided to branch out, to anticipate and take advantage of the sharply changing market. In addition to the existing business, a new company was set up: "The Dutch Whale".
